What is a neighborhood watch?

“A neighborhood watch  is a citizens' organization devoted to crime and vandalism prevention within a neighborhood. It is not a vigilante organization, since members are expected not to directly intervene in possible criminal activity. Instead, neighborhood watch members are to stay alert to unusual activity and contact the authorities. It builds on the concept of a town watch from Colonial America.” -Wikipedia

The goals for the Poncey Highland Neighborhood Watch are:

-strengthening the sense of community between neighbors to improve communication

-making the neighborhood aware of crime/safety issues that are affecting the neighborhood

-increasing the reporting of suspicious activity in the neighborhood

-increasing the cooperation with law enforcement to address issues in the neighborhood

-addressing factors like graffiti, overgrowth, vagrancy and housing code violations that foster crime in the neighborhood

To those ends the Neighborhood Watch will establish:

-Block Captains, for street by street communication/organization

-Phone/email trees to let neighbors know about ongoing/immediate issues

-Regular email communication of Police Reports and items of interest

-Regular neighborhood cleanup days

-Social events, such as National Night Out, block parties etc, so that people get to know each other.
